Jenkins configuration page could be improved

      Description

The problem I'm having is that I have so many plugins installed that the configuration runs over 4-5 screens long... I find it hard to have an overview of it without scrolling. Even just scrolling is hard because the configurations are not in any intuitive order ...

The suggestion here is to be able to categorize the confiuration chunks and group them under different tabs. These tabs could be the category in which a plugin is under the update center page. Now in those tabs they could as be ordered according to their plugin name. No need to have different pages/form, all in the same html page with a jquery plugin to navigate between those pages would be good.

      Thanks

Ideally the creation of the tools configuration dialog (JENKINS-14538) will take care of most of the pain.

Another pain point are plugins that add lists of configurations.
E.g. the "Publish over SSH"-Plugin adds lots of SSH Servers. 3 Servers (without "Advanced") fit on my screen, currently I have about 50 (numbers growing) - and this is only the list of one plugin.
It would be a great improvement, if lists initially were not fully expanded with opened form items, but shown in a more compact variant where individual entries can be edited.
Example: The plugin listing can fit 20 on a screen. A more sophisticated UX could enable sorting of the list entries depending on column, re-ordering, deleting from the list view, etc.

twolfart This is an issue in the specific plugin doing this. It certainly can hide server definitions in an "Advanced…" section.

Also, check out the 2.0 preview builds at https://jenkins-ci.org/2.0/ — we're planning to have "scroll tabs" similar to the freestyle job config in the global configuration as well.
