I configured my jobs to reference a settings.xml file in a special location on the host machine. I do this via the Configure->Build->Advanced->Alternate settings file configuration option.
However, when running a maven release this setting is ignored. Because of this, the login credentials to the release repository were not being used and I was getting an https 401 error when uploading the finished artifact. When I stuck a duplicate of the settings.xml in the home/.m2 directory of the user I run tomcat under, then everything worked fine.
The work-around is fine, but it seems that there is a problem with either Hudson, or these plugins.
I have the Hudson m2release plugin installed, but it has other problems. This problem presented itself during a normal build with "-Dresume=false release:prepare release:perform".
