Fields that accept directory names created during the build often get scary red
error message even if the value is correct.

1. if a build is in progress, don't report any error because it's more likely
that files are just not there.
2. report these messages as warnings, not as errors. Don't use red bold text,
and instead use plain black text with a warning icon.
